Post by DustyStyx »

Has anyone played around with the game/engine Cube much? I just stumbled across it today. Thiking about it now, I think some one did mention it previously. Anyway it has in game map editing, gameplay seems nice, verry fluid, needs crouch :P

Cube is a great game and engine, shame it does not get as much attention as the free software idtech engines (though I love ioquake3). Have not really tried Saurbraten yet...

If you want to play it on Linux, just use the Loki installer:

Well, I checked it out and it seems to have the makings of an adolescent engine. The geometry system is simple and efficient--perhaps too simple. I don't know about that one, but as far as other things go, it seems to make generic use of DirectX 9 stuff, and just doesn't seem to compare to the developmental capability of such engines as Darkplaces. However, that could just be my short-sightedness.

I must say, the "editing mode" is terribly interesting. I urge you to check it out.

In addition, i have posted a zip file containing screenshots (3.08 MB). EDIT: These screen shots were rendered on my GeForce 7600 GT, running a very nice 75fps at 1024*768. I also tested at about 69fps at 1280*1024.

I would also like to add that this game (Sauerbraten) lacks a physics engine, and is apparently still an early version, but it is still rather "solid".

Player collision seems perfect.

Graphic effects seem to be implemented well, including parallax mapping, bump mapping, real-time lighting with soft shadows, bloom, glare, reflection, refraction, blah blah go download it.

Netcode seems super good, but the game play of the FPS game is the opposite of fun. Still, I want some people to try it with me.

Some of the shots from the zip:

Image
^Excellent display of parallax mapping, bump mapping, and gloss mapping with light sources.^

Image
^More gloss, bump, & parallax, with glare easily apparent.^

Image
^The engine is capable of producing some rather natural, organic-looking curves, as well as more rigid structured ones.^

Image
^More rigid ones^ ^_-

Image
^"Natural" curves, bump mapping, slight gloss^
