With all this Doom talk...

Post by Drakan »

I can't help but wonder who likes to do Doom deathmatching! Really, if anyone has doom and does it or likes the sound of it, you should join me while your at it. Hell, join BB (click my sig) while your doing it! I'd love to have people join me. I reside at Zdaemon.

I play in ZDaemon! Doom has a superb multiplayer gameplay value! I play mostly with the oldschool settings, tho (and mostly duels). Which ones do you prefer? It's a shame tho that live in Autralia. Would be great to duel with you sometime! Sorry I didn't reply to you in the "currently playing" thread. But now I am replying in here! :)

Can you explain us clearly, how does ZDaemon break the CPL violation?

Yes. The source code is not available for public.

Wicked! Zdaemon is the shiznit. I'm quite happy with any settings ranging from old-school to "quake style". You know what though, we COULD always just choose some country that gives us even ping.

And R_cain, give it another shot. Usually when I play in my country I get great ping!

Doom source was released in two licenses
: some wierd id software/activision eula license that's pretty restrictive
: gpl (later on)

The former is the first and alot of modern doom engines are still based on it. Zdoom is one of them, and both Zdaemon and Skulltag are based on it.

It's also why they can include heretic and hexen support in one engine because of the similar non-GPL license.

btw i dont play either zd or st. ST lags too much, and ZD's admins and serverops are defensive overreacting furries. also the players have bad bfg habits and never play beyond d5m1, and the zd team are very lax on software piracy so the included getwad is still able to get the game. (similar situation in the quakeworld scene is eQuake, which is just a lazy qw stuff bundled with quake full in one)

That zdaemon thing is very intriguing! I would suggest checking it out if y'all have the time. I would if I could... :? Heh, Doom is cool, but if only they would let go of Blood's source code...

Yes. The source code is not available for public.
There is some info regarding this from Wikipedia:
In ZDaemon 1.07, the development team closed the source of ZDaemon due to numerous attacks and cheating incidents resulting from the usage of the source code. While many people argue that the source code was licensed as GPL at that time, the development team claims that the source came from a mixed number of conflicting licenses, and thus was only subject to one of them. The Doom Public License, which allowed for the source to be closed was determined by the development team as the license that ZDaemon was subject under.

This action caused a number of people to leave the community until ZDaemon was open source again. Most users were not affected, and the amount of cheating incidents and attacks had appeared to of been lowered significantly. Nevertheless, it is felt by some participants, which is mostly reflected in the ZDaemon forum and its chatroom, that the aftermath of the incident has resulted in the subject of discussing or reporting occurrences of suspected cheating to be met with expeditious and fervent opposition by some members, including the Zdaemon development team, and is not taken seriously enough. The opposing contention declares that it's now almost impossible to cheat in ZDaemon, due to the secrecy of the network source code, and that experienced players are regularly accused of cheating by less proficient players, although there has been at least one admitted report, by a member of the development team, that 'possible' cheating had taken place.

The developers had made an agreement that anyone who wants to develop a new feature or code fix can do so in the old Zdaemon 1.06 codebase and submit it to the core development team for inclusion.
I think that sums it all up.

Many people have stopped playing on ZD, because of the admins & ops. I think this is a shame! I have heard many stories about the admins, and have read some of the drama that happened there. But this does not take the fun of playing the same classic game again! The game rocks, and not a few bad admins are gonna take the joy from me. My point here is, that my passion for the game weighs much more than the alleged misdeeds done by the staff. Besides, a lot of controversial material is being written, so I don't even know who's right. I will not stop playing because someone wrote stuff that may not even be right.

The BFG habits.. you mean the fact it's overused or the fact that people whine about it too much? :) As I mainly play duels, I don't have any problem with the over use. BFG only has 5 shots, so it's clearly not a dominant weapon. Especially when I suck with it :) In FFA, if the game gets to too much spamming, I simply leave. I am there to train my chaingun and shotgun anyway, not to actually win the battles (ok, of course partially that too :) ).

Also DW5, while still being the most popular, is not the only wad being played. Now that the settings can be turned more to the oldschool fashion, Doom2 Map01 is gaining quite a lot of attention, at least here in Europe. It is about as played as DW5 (maybe even more), tho when it comes to FFA, DW5 is played more. But there are also some real good duel maps hosted, like king1 and judas23 (not that DW5 and M01 are not good). They are played too, and when you join to one of these servers, you don't have to wait long before you get company! There is also a new unlagged system, which allows you to play on foreign servers without much trouble (okay it's not as good as 30ms ping, but still somewhat doable).

Right, the getwad thingy. I had the impression it does not allow the iwads to be downloaded, but just checked, and I was wrong. I think this is clearly an overlook, but it's not something I'd stop playing for.

Come on Cheapy! Join the fun again! :shooting:

Ya, Some of the Doom 2 maps get played often here too. let's see... Entryway, Dead Simple, Courtyard, Grosse. Off the top of my head anyway. I usually don't care about the BFG to much, as long as it stays out of official duels. Cheap kills bring NO honour.

Say scirmast... how does this unlagged system work? Do I have to download something? Cause I get a good load of over 200 ping from places like USA - and that's the most do-able outside australia!

Oh, and I buddied you up on my list there too. hope ya don't mind. :)

OK, first let's clear this out: BFG is definitely not a cheap weapon, except when the number of players rise too much. When you really understand how it works you can both use and avoid it correctly. In the European doom scene most people are skilled enough to avoid it. There is a piece of document that explains the necessarily info, the BFG FAQ:

http://www.doom2.net/doom2/facility/bfg.html

As you can see, the amount of text is quite astounding.

Now let's move on :) The unlagged system keeps track of player movement, so it remembers where he were a moment ago. Now when there is lag, and you shoot your opponent, the server recognizes the shot a bit later than usually (due to lag of course). However, as the system knows how much lag you've got, and where the player were, it can determine whether the hit would have landed on the opponent in zero ping conditions. It isn't 100% accurate tho, and there are some anomalies, but it greatly improves the gameplay on high ping servers. Still the game shows the ping you actually have. The system does not actually decrease lag, it mimicks the conditions of no lag, and so the game always shows the ping you actually have t the server.

Hehe, I don't mind if you put me to your buddies. We could duel on the US server sometime since I i've got 140-200 ping there.

And one more thing regarding the Getwad. One guy pointed out, that it is just a search engine that searches wads. Much like Google. altavista, or any other p2p program. So it is actually the user who is responsible for using the program. Not the one who built it.

Long posts, huh? :)
