Most of the work Gearbox picked up was already there from 3dRealms (or Triptych). I can assume all Gearbox brought was a little glue to put the pieces in working order. ;)

Gonna have to save up as much money as possible, I want to have this baby preordered and ready to play at release.

I am sure such words have been spoken quite often before.

I knew somebody would pick it up. They had a golden egg- they weren't just gonna trash it.

To paraphrase the Dukester: "Surprise, surprise. We need to wait longer."

And the new mutiplayer component seems like a rip-off from Postal 2: Share the Pain with added sexism. :P

Well, here comes the backlash again:

I notice that nobody is complaining about the fact that the "Capture the Babe" mode was in fact already thought of over six years ago by another developer. Plus the fact that the Common Dreams article states that these features were in the original Duke Nukem 3D rather than Forever, proving that she obviously did not know what the hell she was writing about when she was making the article.

I think the game is going to suck to tell the truth. It seems like the developers are more interested in integrating as much tits and ass as possible and will ignore making a good game.
I saw the feces trailer and it was funny for approximately 2 seconds. I know their shtick is to try to offend but most of it is really overkill and wont make for a good game. Besides, the Postal series has done it all before.........

Actually, I agree with you to be honest Joe. Instead of trying to recapture the spirit of Duke Nukem 3D it seems that Gearbox is trying to accept the mantle of the next Running with Scissors, and is in my mind doing a worse job. What RWS was good at was making something disgusting but at the same time always adding some subtle point to it. The whole thing in the end was a surprisingly subtle parody of western culture. This review goes into the whole thing in quite some depth:

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200502 ... .php?t=629

DNF is none of those things. Duke Nukem 3D was a parody of dumb action movies, big guns and even bigger chests included. But at the end of the day it was more about shooting Aliens and finding key cards, with Duke making some vaguely offensive sometimes witty asides from time to time. DNF takes that and instead of trying to recapture the same spirit just compensates with even bigger chests and even bigger guns. Manhattan Project, to Sunstom's credit, got Duke down nailed - in fact they sometimes raised his IQ by a few points ("That stuff does not look that biodegradable!"). Gearbox does not seem to get it. Granted, I do not know how much of this was 3D Realms' legacy or Gearbox's scheming (they must be doing something with their time, as far as I was aware the game was almost done when they got it) but it does not bode well for one of gamings most recognisable franchises.

This still does not mean I agree with the people complaining about the content in those articles however. While I do not think it will necessarily make a good game, they are free to put whatever they want in it. And we have all heard the same tired arguments against it all before anyway.

On the plus side, RWS claims that Postal III will be out by the end of the year (when it's done as well though). I have seen the Psychiatrist trailer, and although Rick Hunter has sadly "disappeared" (their words, not mine), the new guy does a decent performance and the writing is so far spot on. Can't say about the gameplay, but we will see what we will see.

EDIT: Some backlash from the actual gaming community now over recent developments:
