"We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

Wow.

That kinda explains a lot. Maybe id were wise to allow themselves to be bought out.

According to Timothee Besset (lead network coder and linux porter at id) they are anyway..
[ZeniMax] are true to their word of focusing on the business and letting the studio focus on the games.
Although in this case they where jumping ship from EA, not Activision who they left over a year ago, at least with Rage...

Rage will be the only EA title done. The rest are Zenimax.

They never really jumped ship - what I think happened is that they let EA publish this one title, anything to get out of Activision's hair. According to Carmack, the option layed out by Zenimax was in the works for awhile.

All in all, a good decision.

Offtopic, Rage looks pretty badass.
