What does it mean exactly?
Monolith will not give a SDK for free.

Developers give SDK.s away for free all the time... just not for older tech.

Still, wtf? Do they even HAVE this source? They wouldn't discard it, would they? Willis, do [we] know which party of Atari supposedly currently has the source code?

Like I said before, I'm still not 100% sure where the actual source is, but I do assume Atari has it. As for "which party of Atari," that isn't really a valid question as Blood was never developed under Atari, so it would likely just be in an archive somewhere. There is no knowing for sure without them telling us.

I bet they won't even respond if you ask them if they have it, so as not to constitute further questions.

I wonder if Monolith still has a copy of the source... :) Of course, if they do have a copy, they can't do shi* with it, 'til the rights are abandoned... can that happen? Well that doesn't matter.

That would be sweet. It would be better than never. Of course, that would still suck.

Currently, copyrights expire in about 100 years... thanks to Disney and other influential corperations who have lobbied to extend copyrights, that time period could extend indeffinatly.

I believe as it stands, its 70 years or 50 years after the filer of the copyright dies, whichever comes first, but I could be way off on that, as IANAL

I believe you are thinking of patents, they last for 20 years.

I just looked up when copyrights currently expire. Anything that was made for hire after January 1, 1978 will be under copyright for either 95 years (after publication) or 120 years (after creation) which ever is shorter.

And just to round things out. Trademarks last 10 years but can be renewed indefinatly.

Note: The Blood TM will be due for renewal this year... it may pass quietly iinto the night...

So if the Blood TM expires then the name "Blood" and the logo can be used for another video game? Or does it do more than that?

I second those questions. Also, how can you be so sure that the TM was not renewed at another time? :) -sLink
