In that kind of event, it is typically a younger male (not quite a man) who has been bullied continuously. This person's mindset changes and he/she becomes irrational. Instead of taking revenge on those who hurt him/her, the sight of his/her weapon is blind to identity. This person's view on humankind is nihilistic in that all people must be evil at the core, and lives is not of importance. Happiness no longer exists for this person.
It is an unfortunate occurrence, and it happens too often. Many times they talk about such a thing on news channels, in papers, etc., and it reinforces evil thoughts in the damaged person who is already considering blind violence. This is because they realize that people will hear about it and know that they cannot undo what he/she has done.
The way to prevent such terrible tragedies lies in the hands of every parent and child, everyone. The solution is preemptive: Teach your children how to get along with others. It is never an impossible task, as the new human heart is a malliable, moldable thing.
Teach kindness, compassion, & respect;
show these virtues to everyone, everywhere, forever.
On a closing note, even if you must kill a man or woman in battle to fight "for your country", do so for whatever values you hold true. But do it knowing that man or woman could have been your friend or lover had history run differently.
No matter the race, creed, gender, sexuality, etc.,
Everyone bleeds the same color Blood

That's a very well written post, Slink.
I agree that in most cases criminal activity can be prevented through solid education and better upbringing. However your argument is based on the idea that evil is grown, or formed over time.
That is not always the case though, as siblings could be raised in an identical environment, under the same conditions, and have totally different beliefs and values.
There are people in this world that have absolutely no conscience, and are capable of doing almost any criminal or horrid thing imaginable, without any feelings of remorse or guilt. Were they all created by the environment, or is it quite possible that some were simply naturally born that way?
Your statements might accurately apply to this particular case, but sometimes evil simply exists and nothing could have possibly been done differently to prevent it.
This is all too heavy for me though. So I think I'll go play a game and shoot stuff.
