Yes, and several fine bloodites have taken a crack at slaying the wicked foe.
The most ambitious project to date was probably kurt's B2R, a version of which was made before kurt moved on to Shogo's source code. You can still see some of the radical AI changes in ILA's B2K5, which showcased some fairly drastic stuff.
If you look up some of kurt's work on youtube you can watch what further advances kurt had accomplished before Shogo.
Although not as focused on ai, other projects using b2 source code include:
The DarkAct project, which emphasized weapons, gore & limb-loss effects, and friendly bots for Caleb to summon during sp gameplay.
FXEnhancer, which made code changes that improved weapon stability and player movement, toughened enemies, and brought back the cabal language.
manga2 which replaced all the modern cultists with the robed feins from b1.
Burntech Which made some major texture, ambient sound, and model changes.
Voodoo1.4 A mod that focused on changing b2's game balance. Changes include: shrunken weapon spread boxes to increase player/badie firepower across the board, self heal abilities, and sped up enemies to make them more of a threat. Enemies also received better weapons.
Guns Which did wonderful things to the weapon sounds.
That doesn't cover all the mods that changed source code for b2, but those are some of the biggies.
