Origin of the Blood engine
Is Blood really based on the Duke3D codebase? Many BUILD game sites says it is. And since it's originally started by 3D Realms, it can't be impossible.

No, the doom engine was not the build engine, they are very different.
In answer to the original question, the Build engine was definately and evolving engine, and which each project, it evolved more, keeping certain aspects from its previous involved project. Some of the early work done by 3DR did in fact use template code from Duke3D from what I tell, but it didn't begin as a Duke3D port by any means, it was a fresh game that used placeholders from a pervious game which isn't exactly a new concept.

Redneck Rampage, NAM and WWII GI are the only Build games directly based off of Duke3d's code. (Not even Shadow Warrior, a game by 3D Realms, was based on duke's code)
I once sent a few questions to ken silverman, author of build engine. one of the questions was "what was the first game to use build engine?"
the answer was.... guess? yep. it was blood.
Ken mentioned Blood was the first game that was developed on build engine. but since it was not finished by 3Drealms, nor Q-studios (which became monolith later, but anyway, another name is here) and it was wayyyyy to long in development it wasn't first released builg-engine game. that's why often people call build-engine a "duke3d" engine. of course it is not duke3d engine. duke3d is a build game - that would be a correct phrase. and by the way duke3d was not the first shipped game with build engine. at least Tekwar and Witchaven shipped before duke. but htese two were poor-sellling and comunity was not big. so peeple quicklu forgot those, while duke is long remembered. about duke sites. although I love duke, many of duke's fans are pretty dumb people. they can claim build is duke's engine, they can even claim that duke invented FPS genre or something! don't take duke fans' claims too serious. that's it:)
coz BLOOD was the first!
