Someone recently ported the Darkplaces engine to Android and Cardboard VR (as well as Sansung GearVR):
Seems to work pretty well ( https://youtu.be/7Jui2Dpj65k ), and given the engine also runs Transfusion (and Xonotic) it should be possible to get it working.

The source-code is currently only available to those who purchase it, but legally anyone can take it (GPL) and set up a version that runs Transfusion.
The source code for the GearVR version is here: https://github.com/DrBeef/QuakeGVR
Its based on the QI4A Android port of Darkplaces, which should also be able to run Transfusion.
Maybe this would be a good reason to pick up development again?

Re: Transfusion VR (GearVR & Cardboard)
I actually mirrored the code of the Cardboard port of Darkplaces here:
https://github.com/poVoq/Quake-1-Cardboard-Port-QVR
However after playing around with it for a while (Quake1 works nicely with a Bt controller), I have come to the conclusion that it is not really a suitable option for Tranfusion. It also was very buggy to try and run it.
But if anyone wants to look into it... you know where to find the code
