Wanted: Web 2.0 Experience

Post by DustyStyx »

Does anyone have any experience setting up a wiki, or better yet, some sort of collaboration software suite, like SharePoint/MindTouch?

I'd like to get things setup so people can pick something to work on and donate it at their own pace.

Thanks

This sounds like a good idea Dusty, it would help show that this project is not dead.

I wish I could help set something up, but I have no idea how to use any collaboration software or setting up a wiki software wise. If you need anyone to help administer and organize one though, I would be more than willing to to help.

I understand collaboration software would be the best option, but if you where to use a wiki, what would you want it to do and expect from it exactly?

I'm not sure a wiki would be the best option, I'm throwing it out there to illustrate the idea.

Basically, I'd like

• A directory view of materials that need to be done to recreate Blood, both as replications (what we've traditionally done for Transfusion) and Hi-Rez variations.

These would be broken up into categories: modes, skins, textures, and maps. Source code could be worked into the mix, but I think we have SVN for that. Willis talked about maybe working materials into SVN in general, but it never went anywhere. I'd like something that anyone can jump into with just a web browser, rather than have to setup some additional software.

• A voting system where users could vote if the submitted is considered "done" Also to verify if the work is original, or if it was just ripped from another game.

• The ability for a moderator to preview and pass submitted materials to the public. Also to process user flagged material.

• Statistical data. Basically how close we are to having a 100% reproduction.

It's a little reminiscent of the developer logs over at sourceforge and could easily cause the same kind problems. Those logs were taken down a good while ago. I don't know if they've been put back up since then.

I really wish this has screen shots and source code, but this looks like it might be something to look into: http://www.polarion.com/products/svn/svn_webclient.php

edit: It looks like I was a little tired when I posted this last night. It does have screen shots. http://www.polarion.com/products/svn/we ... nshots.php

It looks like there are also some other options, both with source code.

You could also sort of use our FreeGameDev Art search:
http://search.freegamedev.net/
Which supports projects, svn/cvs and screenshots etc.

Otherwise, what about a google.code page?

Thanks for the link free game dev link, Julius, & welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure we need to have a Google Code page, as we already have a Source Forge account and I believe they serve much of the same functionality. Willis and Elric have worked on it in the past, but it has never really penetrated into other aspects of game development out side of actual code. Mapping and game media have been added by piece at build time rather than to a database that can be pulled from.

Do you have much experience with Google Code in comparison to Source forge, or are you just throwing it out there? I'm just asking because I'm not intimately familiar with the features each of the services offer.

More or less just throwing it out there :zombie:

But if you just want to make development more open, it would be great if you would have a Trak ( http://trac.edgewall.org/ ) like roadmap and so on. Having an open dev mailing list or a dev forum thats used for more or less all dev communication would probably help to.

Edit: Trak is very easy to set up on SF.net, just install it as a hosted project!
