Look up 3dworld magazine and website. Many links to free 3d-modeling goodies. And mucho Tutorials . .

Free-ish stuff:
1. Blender (GPL)
2. gMAX (3DSM lite)
3. MayaPLE

gMAX and MayaPLE have licence and product functionality restrictions, but you'd get use to an industry standard interface. Blender is a little obscure and the user interface is a bit more cryptic.

This site has great tutorails for 3ds Max (gmax will propably work too)
